Andy and I have almost been married now for 6 months. It feels like its flown by! As I began packing away all of my bikinis and summer outfits (it’s finally fall in South Carolina) I got a little nostalgic about our first summer as husband and wife and more specifically – our honeymoon. I thought I would write a recap and review of one of the most amazing weeks of our lives! We visited Secrets Playa Mujeres Resort for 5 days and 4 nights and we couldn’t have been happier with our choice.
We met with our Travel agent about 7 months before our wedding and began planning. If you’re thinking about going on a trip abroad, I would definitely recommend using a travel agent. We used Betsi Jordan with Travel at Prestige and we loved her. She was able to guide us through what resorts would have the type of experience we were looking for and what would be in our budget. We would use her again in the future.
We got married on Friday May 12th and left for our honeymoon on Sunday May 14th. We left out of Charlotte and arrived in Mexico a quick 2 and a half hours later. I’ve heard from several people who wore Hubby and Wifey shirts, that it got them free upgrades but we were not that lucky. Still- I didn’t mind wearing a shirt that told the world I was Andy’s wife!
When we arrived at the resort we were greeted with glasses of champagne. It was raining when we arrived, so we took some time to unpack our bags and open the bottle of champagne left for us in our room and just enjoy the beautiful view.
THIS VIEW!!!! AMAZING.
One of the most important factors for us when choosing a honeymoon destination was that it was all-inclusive, this way we would not have to worry about a thing. (Anyone who really knows me knows that I worry about EVERYTHING) but this trip we were finally able to just relax!
The resort had several restaurants to choose from for dinner, However there was a dress code at most of them asking that men wear pants and closed toed shoes. Fortunately, Andy brought two pairs of pants and was able to re-wear them each night to dinner. Our first night, we ate dinner at a casual restaurant overlooking the pool and ocean. The food was delicious and we were serenaded by a mariachi band. Over the next few days we made an effort to try each restaurant. There were so many options we couldn’t fit them all in. I think my favorite was the Italian restaurant. Our waiter was hilarious and made sure to keep our drinks full.
All of the staff was very friendly and accommodating. We had no two days the same.
Each day we’d get up, put on our bathing suits and head over to get breakfast. We would drink coffee and plan our day. The earlier you got to the pool, the better chairs you got so one morning my sweet husband woke up at 5am to claim the chairs closest to the ocean.
We didn’t do any of the excursions because the resort had so much to do already we didn’t think we would be able to experience it all in the short time we were there. During the day, the resort entertainment staff would coordinate activities all over the property. One day we learned how to salsa next to the pool, the next we entered into a football throwing contest. The staff misheard Andy’s name and announced him as Eduardo. He actually made it to the finals and the whole pool chanted EDUARDO!! EDUARDO!! EDUARDO!!! I laughed so hard my stomach hurt. They had pool and beach volleyball, an exercise class, live music, a dancing competition and one day they even brought out a mechanical bull. We did not participate in that one but it was fun to watch.
At night we would go to dinner and walk on the beach with a drink. One morning we woke up and watched the sun rise. We went to a few different shows and met some friends a long the way. The resort included a map that flagged romantic spots for couples and we spent some time in a few of those locations – they did not disappoint!
By the end of the week, we were both so sad to leave but extremely excited to get home to our sweet puppies and start our new lives together as Husband and Wife!!
6 months later…. wanderlust is setting in. Time to plan our Honeymoon Part II.
